Ask the Man Who Owns One
Hi, I’m Marty Fay, the owner of Motor Works. It’s no secret I adore Volvos. My wife and I bought an 850 Turbo in 1995. Two years ago we passed this rocket on to my 27 year old son. The 850 Turbo has developed a cult following dedicated to “hot rodding” these cars. See more below in “Scary Fast”.

I am big time impressed with the engineering, fit, finish, and performance Volvo builds into its products. But what blows me away are their safety and long life. I have personal reports from customers about how their kids survived accidents that would have killed the occupants of almost any other car. As to long life, Motor Works has dozens of customers with over 275,000 miles on their Swedish bullet-proof transportation.

Scary Fast
What! A Volvo being scary fast? You Betcha! Porche helped design the go-fast parts on the 850 Turbo series. In factory trim, a 1996 850R with manual transmission developes 250 horsepower, with a healthy torque of 260 lb-ft. This equals a tremendous push in the back when you hit gas. It will accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH in 6.5 seconds. You can compare this to Chevy’s hottest 1996 Camaro, the Z28, with 275 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. The Camaro hits 60 MPH in 5.6 seconds from a standstill.

Volvo 850 tuners (hot rodders) are commonly getting 300 to 350 horsepower from turbo, fuel injector and exhaust changes. These modified cars will blow past the Camaro Z28 like it’s standing still. And these modifications are just the beginning. The 850 Turbo series is on its way to becoming today’s 57’ Chevy. Not too shabby for a safe, long lived car. Volvo Rules!
